"Without Music, Life Would Be A Mistake"
I traveled in different countries. My favorite ones are Philippines, New Zealand, France, Spain and Australia!
A nice place to relax around Puerto Princesa
Located around 1 hour from Puerto Princesa City, Matahum Beach is a nice place to spend an afternoon. There's an entry fee but once you enter the place, you'll have the chance to either sit at the bar or privatize one of the table (with your own drinks and food). Most of all the view is stunning and you're practically guaranteed to have a good time while staying there.
The highlight of our Coron tour
This is a little adventure in itself to reach Kayangan Lake. Once the boat has touched the island, you must go on for a little trek up the mountain of a few hundred steps. When you arrive at the top of the stairs, that's when you discover the beauty of the place. The colors of the water, the limestone cliff, the vegetation... it's a splendid sight, really. The other thing that is really amazing is how clear the waters are in the lake. You definitely will enjoy to take a swim there. Provided it's not too overcrowded (which can be the downside of the place), you're sure to have a memorable time in Kayangan Lake.
What a stopover!
We stayed in Dipalian for a night during a 3D2N expedition from El Nido to Coron with Tropical Paradise Travel and Tours. This was perfect. The nature is sublime and the basic infrastructure we needed was there: tents, bathroom with fresh water, and a big table for our dinner. The crew made a big bonfire for us. These are simple but great memories.
It must have known better days...
The "Crocodile farm", now renamed "Palawan Wildlife Rescue" offers to its visitor to discover a crocodile farm, where they grow crocodiles for food but also host some older (and bigger) animals. The center was originally a gift from Japan, which funded the place. But it seems that since then part of the place lacks of maintenance.
The animal reserve has several areas that feel simply abandoned. This can give an eery feeling to the visitor as, at the same time, other parts of the zoo that have animals and seem to be properly maintained. The main reason to these issues probably resolves around a lack of financing which prevents the park administrators from operating it to its fullest capacity (the domain itself is quite big).
Palawan Wildlife Rescue is generally included in Puerto Princesa city tours, so you may get a chance to visit that way, but know that it will generally only include the crocodile part of the place.
As we most of the places included with the expedition from El Nido to Coron that I joined (organized by Tropical Paradise Travel and Tours), this island was a great place to stop. The clear waters, the white sand beach, the chill out atmosphere, you name it. It was just awesome to pass by Calibang island!
Small but very interesting museum
This museum is dedicated to WW2 and its implication in Palawan. For anyone interested in history, this is assuredly a visit worth paying while staying in Puerto Princesa. The museum is not huge but the collection is diverse and interesting, and there are many explanations. You can easily spend an hour in the museum to discover all it has to offer. I highly recommend it and it's probably the best museum in Puerto Princesa.
A nice view and some activities
Not far from Baker's Hill, this tourist spot offers a very nice view on the surroundings of Puerto Princesa. There are some horses and a zipline, and it used to offer some paint ball activity at one point. This is a nice place to come and relax, and it's often included in the Puerto Princesa City Tours.
The best eco-farm in Puerto Princesa
I cannot say how much I love going to Aloha House, on the heights of Santa Monica. Not only is it an awesome place to find fresh food (herbs, vegetables, cheese and more) but the team is great, and the view from the waiting area is quite stunning. Aloha farm is many things at the same time: an eco-farm, a lodge, a tour site with restaurant, and even an orphanage. It's not included in many city tours but you can contact them directly to organize a tour of the farm for example. If you're looking for fresh air and food at the heart of the city, that's an excellent choice.
Not my cup of tea
This location located in the heights of Santa Monica is pretty popular among the locals and it's included in many city tours but it's just not my cup of tea. This park has some statues, restaurants, installations for kids to play and even a little zoo. I understand why many people enjoy it, but I personally don't find it very interesting - it may just not be my cup of tea...
A beautiful spot in a beautiful area
Araw Beach is part of tours and expeditions in Culion and, as a lot of places in this area, it's quite stunning!
One of the stunning places around El Nido
Nacpan Beach is quite a place! This 4 kilometers long white sand beach sums up a lot of the beauty of this part of Palawan. It's located around 45 minutes from town, and accessible by motorbike, van, shuttle or tricycle. The only downside is that it became so popular it can be quite crowded, either at day or night and what was once a deserted place now counts many businesses... That being said, it's still worth the sight!
An historical landmark and important place of everyday life
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is located at the heart of the old Puerto Princesa, just next to Plaza Cartel and not far from the city port. It was built under the Spaniard and has since been renovated to get its bright and beautiful colours. Nowadays, it is an important place in the life of the people and the Sunday services are always bringing together many people. This is definitely a place that you should visit, and you can do so while going on most of the Puerto Princesa city tours.
A spectacular must-do destination in Culion
This is truly an awesome island to see while traveling in Culion, either with a tour from Coron or on an expedition going or coming from El Nido. There are two interesting spots on the island: the long beach, and the sandbar. The sandbar really is spectacular, and I would without a doubt describe it as the most beautiful one I saw either in Palawan or elsewhere. This is the perfect spot to take breathtaking pictures and enjoy the beauty of this part of the Philippines. Awesome!
The Awes And Wonders Of Linapacan
Palawan is renowned as one of the most beautiful island in the world... Let's just say that Linapacan is one of the most beautiful places in Palawan, so it will give you a perspective of what to expect once you step in (or rather sail through) this group of islands, islets, beaches and sandbars...
Far from the crowds, one of the best way to discover Linapacan is with an expedition going from Coron to El Nido, or from El Nido to Coron. There are also overnight camping trips that are organized from El Nido, and you can also and of course stay in Linapacan directly. In any case, this is a place that you should definitely try to visit if you're going to Palawan. Linapacan area is breathtaking.
Beautiful beach to spend a day or a night
Commodore's beach is a great getaway from Puerto Princesa City, both for locals or for tourists visiting Palawan. It offers a buffet, bungalows and there are several infrastructures planned to open in the near future. You can stay there for a day or even for the night, to admire the wonders of milky way far from the city lights.
Beautiful beach in the surroundings of Puerto Princesa
Pakpak-Lauin offers tourists and locals with a great location where to spend a full day or even the night. This is assuredly a good place to get away from the city and enjoy the beauty of Palawan's nature. There are BBQ installations, bungalows and soon to be a restaurant, an hotel and more infrastructures to come.
A place to chill and relax in Palawan
Port Barton is both becoming touristy and staying relatively untouched by the mass tourism. This gives to this little town a different and charming atmosphere. The beach of Port Barton is quite amazing and the town behind it has something of a maze, where you can follow small alleys and either have to make a u-turn or arrive on a new bar or hotel on the front beach.
Port Barton is a good spot for island hopping and snorkelling. It has superb beaches and awesome diving spots. Some of them allow you and almost guarantee you to be able to see sea turtles and other exceptional marine life.
For nature lovers and those who want a more relaxing time far from the city, Port Barton is a destination of choice in Palawan.
Beautiful beach next to El Nido
Marimegmeg Beach has long been known as "Las Cabanas", by the name of the only resort built there. But it is now in the center of a much larger real estate project and starts to be called "Vanilla Beach" instead. The beach is still extremely beautiful but the sense of remoteness and nature is now pretty much gone since there are shops, restaurants, resorts and even a MacDonalds opening in its surroundings. The view on the bay and the islands in front is clearly splendid.
Helicopter Island looks more like a camel or a dinosaur to me and a friend thought it looked more like a fried chicken piece. What is sure is that the island has a very recognisable shape and stands out from the other ones in the beautiful Bacuit Bay archipelago. It has a beautiful beach on almost all the south side of the island, where you can relax for a few minutes or for the whole day. It's also a popular spot for the diving schools and a favorite dive site for beginners. There are no corals directly in front of the island, but it's still possible to snorkel and see fish. All in all, Helicopter island is a great destination of El Nido Tour C that should not be missed.
A good spot to have a walk and go out in the evening
Baywalk Park is one of the very famous spots for people living in Puerto Princesa. There are often events organized there and this is a great spot to either have a walk in the morning or go out for a drink or pica-pica in the evening. It's also included in most of the city tours and the departure points for activities such as dolphin watching or the river cruise dinner and firefly watching.
This was honestly so much fun! As a first timer on a quad, I had to get accustomed to the feel of the vehicle and how it's driven. But once this adaptation period passed, driving the trails of Max Palawan domain on this type of vehicle just feels awesome! The beauty of the place is stunning: the red clay soil, the lush vegetation, the mountains all around really adds to the experience, to the point where you really feel like being on an adventure. This is a sport and you should at least be experienced with driving motorbikes (if not quad themselves), but I would definitely recommend this activity to whoever wants to get some thrill and fun while they stay in Puerto Princesa!
Stunning view on the Ulugan Bay
We stopped in Buenavista View Deck on our way back from the Underground River and the view there is stunning. The little shop was closed, but it seems that they also offer souvenirs and drinks for the tourists. It was a welcome stop on our way back to Puerto Princesa!
An Absolute Must-Do In Palawan
The Underground River is an absolute must-do in Puerto Princesa! I wasn't thinking much of it at first, since it seemed "only" like a river but underground, and I ended up enjoying it tremendously. Being on the river itself is a one-of-a-kind experience, but getting there is also part of the experience. The national park surrounding it is filled with monkeys, lizard and exotic life, and the beaches where you will wait to enter the river are simply stunning. I definitely recommend visiting this place, and to do so with the "extended tour" on the river if possible!
The Subterranean River National Park is quite a place. As most people do, I arrived there with a boat ride from Sabang and landed on Saint Paul Beach, which is a very beautiful beach. The park, the jungle with the monkeys and monitor lizards are right behind the beach and it does feel like arriving on a adventure filled-island! The Underground River itself is of course the highlight of any trip there and I definitely recommend doing a tour there to anyone staying for a few days in Puerto Princesa.
Great restaurant and interesting site
The main attraction here is the restaurant, where you can taste authentic and delicious vietnamese cooking. I would recommend it to whoever loves that kind of food, as this is probably the best place in Puerto Princesa to eat such type of cuisine.
There is only 5 families living on the village right now, but it can still be visited. There is notably a buddhist temple that is worth seeing.
A Truly Beautiful Place
Sure, the city of El Nido has nothing special. It's small and the center feels overcrowded. But the town is not the reason why you would want to visit El Nido anyway. The true beauty of the place is in the two bays that you can visit with island hopping tours: the El Nido bay and the Bacuit Bay.
The beauty of the islands, beaches and lagoons you'll find in El Nido are breathtaking. They are among the most beautiful places that you can find on the planet. That makes it an ideal destination if you're looking for a tropical paradise!
I definitely recommend doing at least Tours A and C, if possible as private tours to avoid the crowds. It's a little more expensive but it's absolutely worth it since you'd want to experience the island basically deserted, and not crowded with hundred of people. You can also join an expedition going to Coron, which is an amazing way to discover the northern parts of Palawan. If you have the time, just do it!
Good Beers And A Good Bar
This place is assuredly one of the best to enjoy good beers in Puerto Princesa. Influenced by the Belgian trappist beers, this brewery produces strong and delicate beers. You can visit the premises and learn more about the way the beers are crafted, or you can simply come to enjoy the bar while drinking a cold one. Both ways, you're due to spend an enjoyable time there!
A Beautiful Beach Close To Puerto Princesa
Located only around 1 hour away from Puerto Princesa, Nagtabon Beach is a nice getaway from the city. The best way to get there is with a motorbike or car rental, but you can also take a tricycle (in that case the road will take longer). We go there to relax or to have a drink while enjoying the sunset, but generally not to swim as there are strong currents. There are a few places where you can eat or have a drink on Nagtabon beach. If you want to sit, they will charge you a fee to use the table, chairs or bungalows. Some of them allow you to bring your own food and wine, so all-in-all it's a good deal if your focus is only to enjoy the day. During the week days, the place is pretty quiet but be aware that during the week-end, it may be quite crowded.
This goes without saying: Palawan is an awesome island, a truly beautiful place which will take your breath away. It's not a surprise that it was elected "Best island in the world" for several years in a row. From Balabac at the bottom south to Coron at the northern tip, the whole place is filled with nature gems. So many that I wouldn't even know where to start!
But let's just name a few: the Underground River, Port Barton, El Nido bay, Coron island, Linapacan, Culion, Balabac, Dumaran... And all the famous beaches such as Nacpan Beach, Nagtabon Beach, Duli Beach, Long Beach. There are so many places and experiences for all type of budgets, from the backpackers to the luxury resorts and private islands.
By the way, just to add a cool trivia to this review, Palawan may remind you of the name for a certain Jedi apprentice... and It's no coincidence since George Lucas traveled in the Philippines and was inspired by the island's name to invent the word "Padawan". And the character of Yoda would have been inspired by the sight of the most cute and big-eyed Tarsier in Bohol (another island to discover, but that's another story!).
Palawan is a must-visit. For nature lovers, beach goers and adventure seekers, this is a paradise where you'll get to experience a wonder of nature.
Nice place to spend some time with friends or family
This is a nice spot, and one that not so many people know about. The rates to enter the different type of pools go from P150 to P250 for adults and P75 to P125 for children. There are hot and cool pools, and you can even get a private hot one. Food and drinks from outside are not allowed but you can buy some directly there, as the premises include a restaurant. If you have enough time in Puerto Princesa, it is worth a visit!
The highlight of Puerto Princesa city tour
This destination should be included in every "classic" city tour in Puerto Princesa. The place is first composed of a butterfly garden, which you will discover first when entering. There are a lot of butterflies flying around, so you'd better not be afraid of these beautiful insects!
Around the garden, there are also a few enclosures hosting local birds, turtles, (small) crocodiles, geckos, bear cats... all animals living in or even endemic to Palawan. There is also a nice collection of insects including beetles, scorpio and stick insects.
The second part of this destination is dedicated to the sharing of cultural aspects of the Palaw'an people. This is the "tribal village" part of the place, where people originating from a local tribe demonstrate some of their craft, music and hunting technics. You will also get a chance to hold one of their "pets" : a python snake!
Finally, there is a little shop by the exit of the premises, where you can find souvenir and local products. The visit of the place will take around 1 hour including both the eco-garden and the tribal village. This is definitely a place to visit in Puerto Princesa, and one of most interesting as it's offering a mix of nature, education and local culture sharing.
The best city in the Philippines
Puerto Princesa is said to be "the greenest city in the Philippines". This is for sure a nice place to live and to visit. There are a lot of activities to do and some of the best are the Underground River tour (around 1h30 from the city), the Honda Bay island hopping, and the city tours.
Less known but just as good, you can go on the Hundred Caves caving adventure on the way to Sabang, spend the day on the seafront at Nagtabon Beach (50 minutes away from the city), and from April to November, you can even see dolphins in Puerto Princesa bay.
As a big city, and as the capital of Palawan, Puerto Princesa offers a good choices of restaurants, bars, malls, resorts and hotels. It's a good place to stay either if you want to party and go out at night, or if you just wish to relax in the higher end accommodations around town. It's a hub for many travelers and, as such, it will give you a good taste of "the best island in the world"!
